Tokyo Police Club – Champ (Review)

Review of the album which dropped on June 8, 2010.

Its been two years since their full-length “Elephant Shell” which made little headways.
Now the Newmarket band released Champ through a new label on Mom + Pop Records.
The album kicks of a theme of the past of David Monk’s life with Favourite Food and Favourite Colour.
At first listening to Favourite Food, I thought they went mellow but half-way through the song it picks up big time with the energetic guitar riffs.
Then you have the tracks that has been out which are Breakneck Speed and Boots of Danger (Wait Up).
Both are fun and catchy to listen if heard on the radio.
Bambi has that synth distortion rock sound.
Hands Reserved is showing off their serious side of their music.
Gone is another great catchy guitar riffing track.
Big Difference is another great energetic rock track.
Frankenstein is the one track that sounds different and stands out.

The only significant thing in Champ is that most of the tracks are pass the 2 minute mark.
A much longer album which is a step up from Elephant Shell.
As the band is transitioning with their sound, you can tell that with Champ they are maturing.
For those wanting more “A Lesson In Crime” era, you are in tough luck.
Overall a great album.
