Last Friday I stopped by AXENÉO7 for the summer opening of the group exhibition Feu de joie alongside Martín Rodríguez’s NOUS / OTRXS.
Feu de joie offered an experimental and unpredictable atmosphere throughout the night.
One of the more memorable parts of the exhibition was watching artists make fresh bagels onsite, adding an interactive and communal element to the space.
There was also a striking performance piece by an artist whose name I unfortunately missed.
The performance involved blowing onto a bagel until her lips turned black, scraping apart a burnt bagel, spitting water into a container, using a cloth to wipe the floor, and breaking pieces of bagel across a black curtain. It was unusual, raw, and left the audience interpreting the meaning for themselves.
The second exhibition, NOUS / OTRXS, is a living installation inspired by traditional Mesoamerican agricultural practices such as Milpa and Chinampas — floating gardens rooted in Aztec permaculture.
The installation features heirloom seeds from the Global South including corn, beans, squash, amaranth, and hot peppers.
Stories and songs are transmitted through an ad hoc radio system integrated into the work, with copper antennas planted into the soil to feed the plants with waves while carrying the memories of migrant communities.
Shaped like an Ojo de Dios, a woven ritual object from Indigenous Mexican cultures, the antennas act as spiritual transmitters that connect ideas of territory, migration, ancestry, and cosmovision.
The exhibition creates a thoughtful reflection on land, identity, and cultural memory while blending nature, sound, and installation art together in a unique way.
The exhibition runs until August 8, 2026.
